We Will Not Be Bullied: ABUFEST Responds As It Postpones Arts Festival

The organizers of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Arts Festival (ABUFEST) have released a statement to explain the postponement of the arts festival which was due to hold on July 26th, 2019 at the ABU Business School. The team also said they will not be bullied as they strive to ensure that the environment is freed from hate speech.

Thank you for your believe in our vision to promote the Arts, ideas and the culture of Northern Nigeria.

Ahmadu Bello University Arts Festival is the first Student based campus festival in Northern Nigeria and fostering an open, approachable, diverse, innovative, fun, and culturally prominent literary community lies at the core of our mission.

As with all good festivals, they provide fantastic opportunities for us to air our views about the things that mean a lot to us. It’s also a great space to learn what means a lot to others.

Over the past few weeks, #ABUFEST19 has listened to diverse opinions about the issues that matter to us and our attendees – We will not accept or tolerate any form of bullying or threat to life and property. We will continue to promote ideas and the Arts and also forge ahead in creating a true safe space for discussions and opinions.

The discussions and diverse opinions held with the Muslim Students Society (ABU Chapter), The student Affairs Division of the Ahmadu Bello University and a vast array of our attendees, guests and partners has been what has informed our decision thus;

We hereby postpone #ABUFEST19 due to the security concerns expressed. We will continue to work hard in ensuring the festival holds in a conducive environment free of hate speech and threats as this is entirely unacceptable.

On #ABUFEST19 Guests Fhakrriyyah Hashim and Maryam Awaisu, we believe and fully support the work that these two women and others like them do in ending the violence against women and girls all over the world.

ABUFEST is #ArewaMeToo as we present #ArewaToTheWorld.

We are sending Love and Light to our team and our Creative Director. Stay strong and may your efforts be rewarded.

Muhammad Gulani,
Creative Director,A
